EMD Serono is the US and Canadian subsidiary and biopharmaceutical business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany.
As part of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany we are uniquely positioned to transform the stability and power of a globally networked organization into the direct impact of targeted, personal service for our customers.
Founded in 1668 in Darmstadt, Merck KGaA of Darmstadt, Germany, is the world's oldest pharmaceutical and chemical company.
The success of the export business to the United States led in 1887 to the establishment of an office in New York, which gave rise to our subsidiary Merck & Co. four years later.
After World War I, Merck & Co. was expropriated in 1917. The two companies have been separate ever since.
Merck KGaA eventually returned to the United States under the name EMD, which stands for “Emanuel Merck Darmstadt”.
To make it easier to distinguish between the two companies, clear rules stipulate the rights to the name and the trademark:
- Merck KGaA of Darmstadt, Germany, – the original – holds the global rights to the name and the trademark MERCK. The exception is North America, where we are represented by the EMD brand.
- Merck & Co. of Whitehouse Station, NJ, holds the rights to the name and the trademark MERCK in North America. In the rest of the world the company operates as MSD, Merck Sharp & Dohme or MSD Sharp & Dohme.
