Thomas Gunning is Vice President and General Counsel at EMD Serono, where he is responsible for managing the organization’s
US legal affairs. Previously, Mr. Gunning was Associate General Counsel for EMD Serono’s Reproductive Health division. He
joined the company in 2002.
Career History
Mr. Gunning spent the first 15 years of his legal career at the Boston office of Nixon Peabody LLP. At Nixon Peabody LLP,
he was a partner in the Corporate Law Department and served as co-chair of its Emerging Business Group. Mr. Gunning has represented
start-up and established companies in the biotech, medical device, software, internet/e-commerce and alternative energy industries.
In 2010, he was named as a Leader in the Law by the New England In-House and Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly. Additionally, Mr.
Gunning was named the Top 100 Change Agents in 2009 by PharmaVOICE, a leading life sciences industry publication and 2010
Father of the Year by the American Diabetes Association. Mr. Gunning speaks and publishes frequently on industry legal topics,
and has been an active member of the community, serving as Director of the Greater Boston Legal Services.

EDUCATION
Mr. Gunning is a graduate of the Boston University School of Law and Fairfield University.
