Merck KGaA is a global pharmaceutical and chemical enterprise with over 40,000 employees in 67 countries. The Pharmaceutical business sector comprises innovative prescription drugs as well as over-the-counter products. The Chemical business sector offers specialty products for the electronics, printing, coatings, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and biotech industries.
The operational business is managed under the umbrella of Merck KGaA headquartered in Darmstadt (Germany). Around 30% of the company’s total capital is publically traded, while the Merck family owns an interest of about 70% via the general partner E. Merck KG. Merck is the world’s oldest pharmaceutical and chemical company—its roots date back to 1668. In 1917, the U.S. subsidiary Merck & Co. was expropriated and has been an independent company ever since.
On January 5, 2007, Merck KGaA acquired Serono S.A. and together with the former Merck Ethicals division, created a global business focusing on innovation prescription pharmaceuticals with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The complementary strengths of both organizations have created a new business that is greater than the sum of its parts, both commercially and across clinical programs.

EMD Serono, Inc. and Merck Serono S.A. are subsidiaries of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, with over 17,500 employees worldwide and a strong presence on all continents.
