Short Bowel Syndrome
Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a condition where a significant portion of a person's small intestine or all of the small intestine is removed as a result of chronic underlying condition or trauma. With SBS, the remaining intestine is unable to absorb electrolytes, water or necessary nutrients sufficiently. Until recently, treatment for SBS consisted of parenteral nutrition, which replaces the nutrients lost by the shortened small intestine with a nutrient mix delivered directly to the bloodstream.
