Glossary of Terms

Understanding the terms and phrases often communicated within the healthcare industry can, at times, be confusing and daunting. Here are definitions to phrases and terms commonly used throughout this section of emdserono.com and within the posted reports. We hope this helps to explain this initiative to you in a clear and easy to understand language.
Healthcare Professional / Healthcare Organization
Refers to an individual or institution that provides preventative, curative, or rehabilitative healthcare services to individuals, families or communities. A healthcare professional includes a physician, nurse or a principal investigator of a clinical trial.
Physician Payment Report
Quarterly report listing payment amounts for meals, educational items, honoraria and fees that EMD Serono provides to individual physicians.
Physician Payment Report - Purposes:
The business reasons for the reported transactions.
  • Advisory Board: A program for which EMD Serono contracts with Physicians to provide input and guidance
  • Consulting: An engagement for which EMD Serono contracts with Physicians to provide expert advice, information, or services
  • Educational Item: Materials designed primarily for the education of physicians or their patients, such as a medical textbook, a subscription to a relevant scientific journal or an anatomical model for use in an examination room
  • Informational Presentation or Discussion: An informational presentation or discussion regarding EMD Serono products or related scientific or medical information
  • Internal Training: Internal training of EMD Serono employees
  • Market Research: Focus groups, surveys and interviews conducted by or on behalf of EMD Serono to understand the nature of its markets and customers
  • MSL Journal Club: A program for which EMD Serono contracts with Physicians to chair a meeting with other physicians to critically evaluate articles related to the therapeutic areas to which EMD Serono is committed
  • Post Conference Reception: EMD Serono funded group meal or reception to faculty and attendees in conjunction with an educational or professional meeting sponsored by a third party
  • Publication (non clinical): An engagement for which EMD Serono contracts with Physicians to create a publication that is not related to an EMD Serono clinical trial
  • Speaker Program: A promotional speaking engagement for which EMD Serono contracts with Physicians to discuss an EMD Serono product to a pre-invited audience of patients or other physicians
Physician Payment Report - Transaction Types:
The form of economic benefit provided to a physician.
  • Educational Material: Materials designed primarily for the education of physicians or their patients, such as a medical textbook, a subscription to a relevant scientific journal or an anatomical model for use in an examination room
  • Meals: Meals provided to a physician in conjunction with an informational presentation or discussion by an EMD Serono employee or a speaker engaged by EMD Serono
  • Payment - Fee for Service: Payments for genuine consulting or other services provided by a contracted physician on behalf of EMD Serono
  • Physician Expenses - Meals: Payments for reasonable meal expenses incurred by physicians engaged by EMD Serono
  • Physician Expenses - Transportation: Payments for reasonable travel expenses incurred by physicians engaged by EMD Serono
