EMD Serono Research Institute, Inc. in Rockland, Massachusetts is our US center of excellence for developing new and innovative therapies.  Our research efforts at this facility build on our demonstrated capabilities in discovering and developing biotherapeutic proteins, with an increasing focus on small molecules drugs designed to target specific disease-related proteins and pathways. The more than 200 dedicated employees at EMD Serono Research Institute across two locations bring essential expertise and technical know-how across critical areas, including human genetics, chemistry, bioinformatics, protein modeling and bioengineering.  Combined, this depth and breadth of knowledge creates a powerful engine that drives creativity and innovation throughout the entire organization.

EMD Serono Research Center, Inc., in Billerica, Massachusetts, provides additional expertise, resources and people-power that are expected to enhance our drug discovery and disease biology capabilities today and into the future. For more than 15 years, the employees at EMD Serono Research Center have dedicated themselves to discovering new treatments for cancer and immunologic disorders. This facility is a critical asset as we focus on oncology as an emerging therapeutic area.  We expect that the cutting-edge research ongoing at EMD Serono Research Center will enable EMD Serono, Inc., to develop novel therapies for cancer, as we have accomplished in the areas of neurodegenerative disorders, fertility and endocrinology.

EMD Serono Biotech Center, Inc., located in Billerica, MA, is dedicated to producing high purity drugs in a reproducible and efficient manner while maintaining superior quality standards consistent with current Good Manufacturing Practices.  This 24,300 square foot facility produces investigational protein therapies for use in development programs, toxicology studies and early phase clinical trials.  Features of this leading-edge facility include two segregated suites, dedicated water- and air-handling systems to ensure purity and sterility, and multiple systems for documenting and controlling quality of all aspects of the manufacturing process. EMD Serono Biotech Center team oversees process transfer and scale-up, protein production and product release with an unwavering commitment to quality, never forgetting that the patient is the ultimate customer.

The expansion of the Billerica facility, announced in 2008, represents a $65 million investment construction of the new 140,000 square foot facility, which is expected to be complete in late 2010. The new facility will support the company’s commitment to developing a state-of-the-art center of excellence focused on discovering innovative treatments for unmet medical needs.

The new site will accommodate approximately 200 scientists with expertise in cancer biology, cancer immunotherapy, oncogene signaling, medicinal chemistry, molecular modeling, protein engineering, therapeutic antibodies and manufacturing cell lines across the core therapeutic areas of neurodegenerative diseases, cancer and fertility. The expansion in Billerica will bring the discovery scientists closer to approximately 50 colleagues in Technical Operations who specialize in process development and protein production for early clinical trials. This collaboration will play a critical role in creating an innovative and collaborative campus environment for drug discovery and development. The construction of the Billerica facility will result in approximately 200 to 300 jobs, and more than 100 new, permanent research jobs in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
