In 2002, EMD Serono, Inc. and Pfizer Inc. entered into a copromotion agreement for the co-marketing of Rebif® (interferon beta-1a). Rebif is a leading therapy in the area of neurodegenerative diseases.
Fast Forward, LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the American National Multiple Sclerosis Society, have entered a collaborative partnership to evaluate and fund promising multiple sclerosis (MS) research projects. Proposals will be jointly developed by Merck Serono and Fast Forward. Merck will provide up to $19 million in funding.
A research, development and commercialization agreement with Apitope, a European Biopharmaceutical company, has granted exclusive worldwide rights to Merck Serono to develop and commercialize Apitope's product ATX-MS-1467. This peptide therapeutic has completed an initial clinical study in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS).

EMD Serono, Inc., provided Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) with a grant for the development of the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Discovery Forum, an advanced scientific web community. The MS Discovery Forum provides a virtual, networked community for MS experts to come together and foster on-line discussions, facilitate collaborations and create opportunities for translational research. This unique platform will help generate new and innovative discoveries in MS research with the ultimate goal of speeding the delivery of novel therapies to people living with this disease. EMD Serono is proud to serve as the founding donor for this initiative.
