Diversity and Inclusion in Clinical Trial Participation

EMD Serono’s Commitment to Improving Diversity and Inclusion in Clinical Trial Participation:

In our mission to transform the lives of patients with difficult-to-treat diseases, EMD Serono is committed to developing treatments that meet diverse patients’ needs. We understand the need of having a diverse patient population in each clinical trial and throughout the life cycle of the drug development process. We are committed to continuously challenge the status quo and be at the forefront when it comes to development, recruitment, and execution of clinical trials.

EMD Serono will focus on 4 key pillars in our commitment to have proper representation of diverse populations in our clinical trials:

Partner with healthcare providers who treat underserved and racial/ethnic populations to ensure comprehensive patient representation when developing treatments.

Design inclusive clinical trials that follow internal and external guidance and best practices related to diversity of patients in clinical trials.

Ensure that trial participants represent target populations that are affected by the disease.

Continue to invest in community education, outreach and building trust within diverse communities to enhance clinical trial awareness and participation in the patient and medical community:

  • Awareness of our clinical trials and drug development efforts for our new medicines;
  • Recruitment of racial/ethnic populations in clinical trials;
  • Incorporate the voice of the patient throughout the clinical trial to encourage continued engagement and participation; and
  • Regular collection of insights from patient organizations regarding advancement of diversity and patient retention in clinical trials.

Our commitment and objective regarding diversity and inclusion of patients in clinical trials is to better reflect the patient population that is in need and would most likely benefit and use our medicine(s) for treating their disease. Our focus includes, but is not limited to, age, sex, race, ethnicity, religion, and their intersections.
