Miguel Fernández Alcalde

As Chief Operating Officer, Miguel Fernández Alcalde is responsible for driving operational excellence and executing strategies to position EMD Serono for continued success in a dynamic and rapidly changing industry.

Miguel has been with our global parent company, Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany since 2014, most recently serving as Vice President, Business Excellence & Innovation and Head of CEO Office Healthcare. In this role, he was responsible for ensuring business excellence across all franchises and regions of the healthcare business. Miguel’s responsibilities also included overall governance of the Healthcare CEO Office and contributing to our Healthcare Global Specialty Innovator ambition and Focused Leadership strategy.

Miguel has more than 17 years of experience in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sector, serving as a senior leader in a variety of global and in-market roles, with a special focus on the application of innovative solutions for the improvement of people's health.

Miguel holds a degree in Pharmacy by University Complutense of Madrid, and postgraduate degree in Management from the IESE.
